Shopify Fees on a $20 Digital Product: What You Pay

Shopify's per-transaction fees are low, but the $39/month subscription changes the math. Here's when it works for digital sellers.

Shopify fees on a $20 digital product

On the Basic plan ($39/month) with Shopify Payments:

Payment processing (2.9% + $0.30): $0.88 No transaction fee (when using Shopify Payments) No listing feePer-sale fees: $0.88 You keep per sale: $19.12

But you also pay $39/month regardless of how many sales you make. That subscription cost needs to be spread across your sales.

The real cost depends on volume

Monthly salesSubscription per saleTotal fee per saleYou keep
10 sales$3.90$4.78$15.22
25 sales$1.56$2.44$17.56
50 sales$0.78$1.66$18.34
100 sales$0.39$1.27$18.73
At 10 sales per month, Shopify's effective cost is $4.78 per sale (24%). That's more expensive than Etsy ($2.35, or 11.8%). At 50 sales per month, Shopify drops to $1.66 per sale (8.3%), beating Etsy comfortably. The breakeven: about 25-30 sales per month at $20. Below that, Etsy is cheaper. Above that, Shopify saves money.

Shopify vs Etsy vs Gumroad at $20

At 50 sales per month:

PlatformMonthly costPer-sale costYou keep (total)
Etsy$117.50$2.35$882.50
Gumroad$100.00$2.00$900.00
Shopify$83.00$1.66$917.00
Shopify saves $34.50/month vs Etsy and $17/month vs Gumroad at 50 sales of $20 products. At 100 sales, the savings double.

The catch: traffic

Shopify doesn't send you buyers. Neither does Gumroad. But Etsy does. That $117.50 in Etsy fees includes marketplace traffic that you'd need to generate yourself on Shopify.

If you're paying for Google ads or Facebook ads to drive Shopify traffic, add that cost to your Shopify total. The "cheaper" platform becomes the most expensive one once you factor in customer acquisition.

Shopify makes financial sense when you have your own traffic: an email list, a blog, a YouTube channel, or strong social media. If you're relying on the platform to bring customers, Etsy wins despite higher fees.

When to add Shopify for digital products

The typical path: start on Etsy, build a customer base, collect emails, then launch a Shopify store for repeat customers and direct traffic. Etsy stays as your discovery channel. Shopify becomes your higher-margin channel.
