How to Sell Google Sheets Templates on Etsy

Why Google Sheets templates sell

Google Sheets is free, runs in any browser, and syncs across devices. More people have access to Google Sheets than Excel. When a buyer purchases your spreadsheet template, they don't need to install any software. Just click a link, make a copy, start using it.

I sell several Google Sheets templates on Etsy. My best performer is a small business expense tracker at $16 that's earned over $1,900 in 12 months. Spreadsheets aren't glamorous products but they solve real problems and buyers search for them with high purchase intent.

How delivery works

The delivery method for Google Sheets is different from regular file downloads:

1. Create your template in your own Google account 2. Set sharing to "Anyone with the link can view" (not edit) 3. Create a PDF that includes: - The Google Sheets link - A "Make a copy" button/link (add /copy to the end of the URL) - Instructions for how to use the template - A note that they need a free Google account 4. Upload the PDF to Etsy as your digital download

When the buyer clicks the "Make a copy" link, Google creates a personal copy in their own Drive that they can edit freely. Your original stays untouched.

Alternatively, also offer an Excel (.xlsx) download for buyers who prefer Excel. Export from Google Sheets to Excel, test that formulas work, and include both in your Etsy listing. More format options = more potential buyers.

What sells in Google Sheets templates

Personal finance: Budget trackers, expense logs, savings goal calculators, debt payoff planners, net worth trackers. The biggest category. Personal finance is something everyone needs and spreadsheets are the natural format. Price: $8-16.Small business tools: Invoice trackers, P&L statements, inventory management, client CRM, project budgets. Business owners need these and are willing to pay more because the tool saves them real money. Price: $12-25.Freelancer tools: Income tracking, tax estimate calculators, client management, project pricing sheets. Freelancers are natural spreadsheet buyers. Price: $10-20.Fitness and health: Macro trackers, workout logs, body measurement trackers, supplement schedules. Niche but dedicated audience. Price: $5-12.

Making spreadsheets that sell

Conditional formatting. Color cells based on values (green = under budget, red = over budget, yellow = close to limit). This is the single feature that makes spreadsheets feel premium. Takes 5 minutes to add.Protected cells. Lock formula cells so buyers can't accidentally delete them. Leave input cells unlocked and clearly marked. This prevents the #1 support message: "I broke a formula."Example data. Fill the template with realistic sample data. An empty spreadsheet with just column headers looks boring in listing photos. A spreadsheet with 3 months of example expenses looks useful and practical.Instructions tab. Include a "How to Use" tab as the first sheet. Color-coded legend, step-by-step instructions, tips for customization. This saves you support time.Dashboard tab. If your spreadsheet tracks data over time, add a summary dashboard with charts and totals. A budget tracker with a pie chart showing spending by category looks much more valuable than a plain table.

Tags and SEO

Buyers search for specific tools, not generic spreadsheets:

Good tags: "budget tracker google sheets," "expense spreadsheet template," "small business bookkeeping," "freelance income tracker," "monthly budget template."

Bad tags: "spreadsheet," "template," "google sheets," "finance." Too broad.

Include "Google Sheets" in your title. Many buyers specifically search for this format. "Budget Tracker Google Sheets Template" beats "Budget Tracker Spreadsheet" for this audience.
