Selling Spreadsheets and Budget Templates Online (What Works in 2026)

Spreadsheets are the least glamorous digital product. They're also some of the most profitable. Here's how to create and sell them on Etsy and Gumroad.

Why spreadsheets sell better than you'd expect

Nobody gets excited about a spreadsheet. They're not pretty. They don't look good on Pinterest. You can't make a satisfying Instagram reel about a Google Sheets budget tracker.

But here's the thing: my small business expense tracker spreadsheet has earned over $1,900 in 12 months. It took me one afternoon to build. That's one of the best time-to-revenue ratios of anything I sell.

Spreadsheets sell because they solve real problems that people actively search for solutions to. "Budget tracker," "expense log," "inventory spreadsheet," "freelance invoice tracker." These aren't browsing-for-fun searches. These are "I need this right now" searches. High purchase intent, low return rates, minimal support.

What spreadsheet templates sell well

Personal finance: Budget planners, expense trackers, savings goal calculators, debt payoff trackers, net worth calculators. This is the biggest category. My budget tracker for couples is consistently in my top 5 sellers. Average price: $8-15.Small business tools: Expense tracking, profit/loss statements, invoice templates, mileage logs, inventory management. Business owners need these and most don't want to pay for accounting software when a spreadsheet does 80% of the job. Average price: $10-22.Freelancer tools: Client CRM sheets, project trackers, income/expense logs, tax estimate calculators, time tracking templates. Freelancers are a great audience because they understand the value of organization tools and they buy without overthinking. Average price: $10-18.Real estate: Rental property calculators, house flip budget sheets, mortgage comparison tools, property management trackers. Niche but high-intent buyers who pay well. Average price: $12-25.Teacher and school: Grade calculators, attendance trackers, lesson plan templates, classroom budget sheets. Steady demand, especially during back-to-school season. Average price: $5-12.Health and fitness: Macro trackers, workout logs, body measurement trackers, supplement schedules. Smaller market but dedicated buyers. Average price: $5-10.

Google Sheets vs Excel: which to sell

Short answer: sell both. Or at least sell Google Sheets.

About 70% of my spreadsheet sales are Google Sheets templates. The delivery is cleaner (share a link, buyer makes a copy) and more buyers have access to Google Sheets than Excel. No software purchase required.

But some buyers specifically search for "Excel budget template" or "Excel tracker." Having an Excel version expands your search surface area. I create in Google Sheets first, then export to Excel and test that the formulas still work. Usually takes 15-20 minutes per product.

The delivery for Google Sheets: buyer gets a PDF with a link to the Google Sheet and a button that says "Make a copy." They click it, get their own editable version. Same delivery method as Canva templates.

The delivery for Excel: buyer gets the .xlsx file directly as a digital download on Etsy.

How to make a spreadsheet that sells

The design standards are different from printable planners or Canva templates. Spreadsheets don't need to be beautiful. They need to be functional, clear, and immediately usable.

Start with the problem. Don't build a spreadsheet and then find an audience. Find a problem first. "I need to track my freelance income and expenses for taxes." Now build the spreadsheet that solves it.Make it work without instructions. The best spreadsheets are self-explanatory. Labels are clear. Input cells are highlighted or colored. Protected cells prevent buyers from accidentally breaking formulas. A sample row shows what data goes where.Include an instructions tab. Even though the spreadsheet should be self-explanatory, include a tab called "How to Use" with brief instructions. This prevents 80% of support messages.Use conditional formatting. Color-coded cells that change based on values (green for under budget, red for over budget) make your spreadsheet feel premium. It takes 5 minutes to add and buyers mention it in reviews constantly.Test with real data. Fill the spreadsheet with realistic sample data before screenshotting for your listing. An empty spreadsheet with column headers is boring. A spreadsheet filled with sample months of expense data looks useful and professional.Include a pre-filled example AND a blank version. Deliver two files: one with sample data so the buyer can see how it works, and one blank for them to start fresh. This is a small touch that gets mentioned in positive reviews.

Pricing spreadsheet templates

Spreadsheet templates can command slightly higher prices than PDFs because buyers perceive them as tools, not documents. A PDF planner is a piece of paper you print. A spreadsheet is a functional tool with formulas and automation.

My pricing: - Simple single-purpose sheets (one tracker): $5-10 - Multi-tab templates (budget with categories, charts, summaries): $12-18 - Complete systems (full business finance toolkit): $20-35 - Bundles of 3-5 related sheets: $18-28

My best-performing spreadsheet is a "Small Business Expense Tracker with Tax Estimate" priced at $16 on Etsy and $19 on Gumroad. The tax estimate feature is what sells it. Freelancers and small business owners worry about taxes, and a spreadsheet that tells them roughly what to set aside is worth $16 to them easily.

Where to sell spreadsheets

Etsy works well for spreadsheets because people search for specific tools. "Budget tracker google sheets" and "expense spreadsheet template" are real searches with real purchase intent. The [tag analyzer](/tools/tag-analyzer) can help you find the right keywords.Gumroad works if you market to a specific audience. Freelancer finance tools shared in freelancer communities. Real estate spreadsheets shared in investor groups. The product needs to reach the right people through your content.

Both platforms deliver the files the same way. On Etsy, upload the files directly (Excel) or include a Google Sheets link in a PDF. On Gumroad, same approach.

I sell most spreadsheets on both platforms simultaneously. Etsy brings new customers through search. Gumroad brings repeat customers from my email list at a lower fee rate. Same product, two income streams.

The support reality

Spreadsheet templates get more support messages than PDFs or Canva templates. "The formula isn't working." "I can't edit this cell." "How do I add a new category?" Budget about 5-10 minutes per week per active spreadsheet product for customer messages.

Tips to reduce support: - Protect cells with formulas so buyers can't accidentally delete them - Color-code input cells (blue = type here, gray = don't touch) - Include a troubleshooting section in your instructions tab - Add a FAQ to your Etsy listing description

Despite the slightly higher support load, spreadsheets are some of my highest-revenue products relative to creation time. A 4-hour creation investment earning $150+/month for a year is a trade I'll make every time.

Spreadsheets aren't sexy. They don't trend on TikTok. But they solve real problems, sell to motivated buyers, and keep earning money months after you create them. For a side business, that's exactly what you want.
