How to Set Up an Etsy Shop for Digital Products (Step by Step)

The complete setup process from creating your account to publishing your first digital download. Takes about 30 minutes.

Before you start

You need three things: 1. A product to sell (PDF, template, spreadsheet, anything digital) 2. 5-7 listing photos (mockups, not screenshots) 3. An email address for your Etsy account

If you don't have a product yet, read our guide on [how to create printables to sell](/blog/how-to-create-printables-to-sell) or browse [25 digital product ideas](/blog/digital-product-ideas-that-sell) for inspiration.

Step 1: Create your Etsy account (2 minutes)

Go to etsy.com and click "Sign in" then "Register." Use your email or sign in with Google/Apple. This creates a buyer account. You'll convert it to a seller account next.

Step 2: Open your shop (5 minutes)

Click "Sell on Etsy" from the menu (or go to etsy.com/sell). Etsy walks you through:

  • Shop language: English (or your language)
  • Shop country: Where you're located
  • Shop currency: USD (or your currency)

Then pick your shop name. 4-20 characters, letters and numbers only. Don't stress about this. It matters less than you think. See our [shop name guide](/blog/etsy-shop-name-ideas-digital-products) if you're stuck.

Step 3: Create your first listing (15 minutes)

This is where most new sellers slow down. Here's exactly what to fill in:

Photos: Upload 5-7 images. First image is your thumbnail in search results. Make it a mockup, not a screenshot. See our [mockup guide](/blog/how-to-create-mockups-for-etsy).Title: 140 characters of keywords. Not a creative name. "Budget Planner Printable, Monthly Expense Tracker PDF, Financial Organizer Template, A4 Letter Size" See our [title guide](/blog/how-to-write-etsy-titles-that-rank).About this listing: Select "A digital file" under "Type." This tells Etsy it's a digital download.Category: Pick the most specific category available. "Digital Planners" is better than "Planners."Description: Lead with what the buyer gets. "This listing includes a 10-page monthly budget planner in PDF format..." Then features, then how to use, then a FAQ section.Tags: Fill all 13 with multi-word phrases. "budget planner pdf," "expense tracker template," "monthly finance planner." See our [SEO guide](/blog/etsy-seo-tags-titles-keywords).Price: Set based on your research. Check what competitors charge for similar products. Our [pricing guide](/blog/how-to-price-digital-products) covers the strategy. Use our [Etsy fee calculator](/tools/etsy-fee-calculator) to see what you'll keep after fees.Digital files: Upload your files. Up to 5 files, max 20MB each. For PDFs, upload directly. For Canva templates or Google Sheets, upload a PDF containing the template link and instructions.

Step 4: Set up payment (3 minutes)

Etsy uses Etsy Payments. You'll need to provide: - Your bank account details (for receiving payouts) - Your tax information (Social Security Number or EIN in the US) - A credit card on file (Etsy charges fees to this card)

Payouts typically arrive 3-5 business days after a sale. You can set a payout schedule (daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly).

Step 5: Complete your shop profile (5 minutes)

  • Shop icon: Your logo or a simple branded image. 500x500px.
  • Shop banner: Optional but looks more professional. 1200x300px.
  • About section: Brief description of who you are and what you sell. Keep it personal and genuine.
  • Shop policies: Set your return/exchange policy. For digital products: "Due to the nature of digital downloads, all sales are final." Standard for the category.

Step 6: Publish and optimize

Hit publish on your first listing. It costs $0.20. Your listing is now live on Etsy.

But don't stop at one listing. Add 10-15 products in your first week if possible. Each listing is a new search entry point. More listings = more chances for buyers to find you. See [how many listings you need](/blog/how-many-etsy-listings-to-make-money) for the data behind this.

After setup: what to do next

1. Add more listings. Aim for 10-15 in your first 2 weeks. 2. Opt out of offsite ads if you're starting small. Go to Marketing > Offsite Ads > Toggle off. See our [offsite ads guide](/blog/etsy-offsite-ads-opt-out). 3. Set up the Etsy seller app on your phone for notifications. 4. Start keyword research for your next products. Use our [tag analyzer](/tools/tag-analyzer) or [keyword research guide](/blog/how-to-do-keyword-research-etsy).

The whole setup takes about 30 minutes. The first sale takes longer. But you can't sell anything until the shop is open. So open it today and start from there.
