How to Sell Digital Planners for GoodNotes and Notability

Digital planners for iPad apps are a growing niche with buyers willing to pay $10-30. Here's how to create and sell them.

What are digital planners (and who buys them)

Digital planners are PDF files designed to be used in tablet note-taking apps like GoodNotes, Notability, and Zoomnotes on iPad. Unlike printable planners that buyers print on paper, digital planners are used directly on a tablet with a stylus.

They include clickable tabs for navigation (tap "March" to jump to March), hyperlinked pages (tap a day to open that day's page), and space designed for stylus writing. Buyers use them exactly like a paper planner, but on their iPad.

The market skews toward women 25-45 who use iPads for personal and business organization. They're willing to pay $10-30 for a well-designed digital planner because they use it daily for an entire year.

How to create digital planners

Tool options:
  • Keynote (Mac, free): The most popular tool among digital planner creators. You design each page as a Keynote slide, add hyperlinks for navigation, then export as PDF. Free and surprisingly powerful for this specific use case.
  • PowerPoint: Works similarly to Keynote. Design slides, add hyperlinks, export as PDF. Better cross-platform compatibility.
  • Canva + manual hyperlinking: Design pages in Canva, export as PDF, then add hyperlinks in a PDF editor. More steps but Canva's design tools are easier for beginners.
  • GoodNotes itself: Some creators design directly in GoodNotes and export. Limited design tools but you know exactly how it'll look to the buyer.
The critical feature: hyperlinks.

What makes a digital planner different from a regular PDF is interactive navigation. Buyers expect: - A cover page with monthly tabs - Clickable month tabs that jump to that month's overview - Clickable dates that jump to daily pages - A "home" button on every page that returns to the cover - Sidebar tabs for notes sections, goals, trackers

Without proper hyperlinking, it's just a PDF. With hyperlinks, it's a functional digital planner. The linking takes time (1-3 hours for a full-year planner) but it's what buyers are paying for.

What sells

Dated annual planners: January-December with daily, weekly, and monthly views. These are your bread and butter. Buyers purchase once a year. Price: $15-25.Undated planners: Same structure but no dates printed. Buyers can start any month. These sell year-round without needing an annual update. Price: $12-22.Specific-purpose planners: Budget planners, fitness trackers, meal planners, student planners, business planners. Niche planners face less competition and can command higher prices. Price: $10-20.Sticker sets: Digital stickers that buyers drag onto their planner pages in GoodNotes. Small files, quick to create, good for repeat purchases. Price: $3-8 per set.Planner bundles: A dated planner + sticker set + goal tracker + journal pages. Bundles at $25-40 offer perceived value and higher per-order revenue.

Listing on Etsy vs Gumroad

Both platforms work for digital planners. Etsy has the search traffic advantage (buyers search "digital planner goodnotes" directly on Etsy). Gumroad works well if you have a planner review blog or YouTube channel driving traffic.

File delivery: Upload the PDF to Etsy as a digital download. Include a "how to import into GoodNotes" PDF with step-by-step screenshots. Buyers who are new to digital planning need this guidance. It prevents the most common support message: "I downloaded the file but don't know what to do with it."

Tags should include app-specific terms: "goodnotes planner," "notability template," "ipad planner," "digital planner pdf," "hyperlinked planner." Our [tag analyzer](/tools/tag-analyzer) can help find which variations perform best.

Pricing and margins

Digital planners sell at higher prices than printable planners because of the hyperlinking work and the perceived tech sophistication.

At $18 on Etsy, you keep about $15.60 after [fees](/blog/etsy-fees-explained-what-you-actually-keep). A well-optimized listing selling 20 units per month generates $312 in profit from one product. Annual planners need refreshing each year, but undated planners earn indefinitely.
