Gumroad vs Patreon: Which One Actually Pays Creators More
One sells products. The other sells subscriptions. I've used both and the right choice depends on what you're selling and how your audience buys.
Two platforms that look similar but work completely differently
People compare Gumroad and Patreon constantly, but they're solving different problems. Gumroad is a checkout page for selling individual products. Patreon is a membership platform for recurring revenue. The overlap is that both are used by creators selling digital stuff.
I used Patreon for about six months for a monthly template pack. Then I switched the same content to Gumroad as individual purchases. My total revenue went up. But it's not that simple, and your situation might be different. Let me walk through what I learned.
How each platform works
Gumroad is transactional. You create a product (PDF, template, course, whatever), set a price, and share a link. Someone clicks, pays, downloads. Done. No ongoing relationship required. Patreon's payment processing fees are per-patron, per-month. If you have 100 patrons at $5/month, those $0.30 flat fees across 100 transactions add up to $30/month in processing alone. On Gumroad, payment processing is baked into the 10%. No separate per-transaction flat fee.
For low-priced tiers ($3-5/month), Patreon's effective fee rate can hit 15-18% once processing fees are factored in. For higher tiers ($20+/month), it drops closer to 10-11%.
For one-time products on Gumroad, the math is simpler and usually cheaper on anything above $10.
When Gumroad makes more sense
You sell finished products. Templates, courses, ebooks, design assets, printables. Things people buy once and use. Gumroad is purpose-built for this. The buyer pays, gets the file, moves on. No ongoing content obligation on your end.You don't want to commit to a content schedule. Patreon patrons expect regular updates. Miss a month and they cancel. On Gumroad, you sell when you have something to sell. No pressure to produce on a schedule.Your products have different values. A $7 planner and a $45 course bundle can coexist on Gumroad. A friend of mine sells Canva template bundles on Gumroad for $20-35 each. Her Patreon ($8/month) gives patrons 2 exclusive templates per month, early access to her Gumroad releases, and a private feedback group where patrons can request specific templates.
Her Gumroad makes about $1,800/month. Her Patreon (120 patrons) adds $960/month. Different audiences, different value propositions, minimal overlap.
The creator type test
Here's a quick way to figure out which platform fits you:
Go with Gumroad if: You make things people buy once. Templates, courses, tools, assets. You prefer to work in bursts, not on a schedule.
