Best Mockup Generators for Etsy Sellers (Free and Paid)
Good mockup photos doubled my conversion rate. Here are the tools I use and recommend, from free to premium.
Why mockups matter
A flat screenshot of your PDF planner gets 1-2% click-through rate in Etsy search. The same planner in a lifestyle mockup (iPad on a marble desk, or printout on a clipboard in a bright room) gets 3-4%. I've tested this repeatedly. Mockups aren't optional for digital product sellers. They're the difference between getting clicks and being invisible.
We covered [how to create mockups](/blog/how-to-create-mockups-for-etsy) in a separate guide. This post is specifically about which tools to use.
Free options
Canva (free plan). Search "mockup" in Canva templates. Drag your product image into the frame. Limited selection but good enough for getting started. The mockups look clean if a bit generic.Smartmockups (smartmockups.com). Free tier with about 200 mockups. Upload your design, it auto-places it into the scene. Device mockups (tablets, phones, laptops) work particularly well for digital products. I used Smartmockups for my first 4 months.Mockup World (mockupworld.co). Free PSD mockup files. You need Photoshop or Photopea (free online alternative) to use them. The quality is high because these are PSD files with smart objects. More work to use but better results.Placeit free tier (placeit.net). A few free mockups available. The quality is excellent but the free selection is very limited. Useful for testing before committing to a paid plan.Paid options
Creative Market mockup bundles ($15-30 per bundle). My top recommendation. One-time purchase. Each bundle includes 10-20 scenes. The scenes are unique (other sellers won't have the same backgrounds). I bought 3 bundles for $45 total and they've served 60+ listings.Placeit by Envato ($14.95/month). Huge library of mockups. Device screens, apparel, mugs, frames, everything. The subscription model means ongoing cost, but the variety is unmatched. Worth it if you create 10+ new listings per month and need fresh scenes constantly.Canva Pro ($13/month). The background remover and additional mockup templates make product photo creation faster. If you already use Canva Pro for design, the mockup features are a bonus.Artboard Studio (free tier + $12/month pro). Newer tool with modern mockup scenes. Web-based, no software needed. The scenes look trendy and current. Good if you sell to a design-savvy audience. What I actually use
My stack: Creative Market bundles (for unique scenes) + Canva (for quick assembly and text overlays) + Smartmockups free (for device mockups when I need a specific angle).
Total cost after initial bundle purchase: $0/month for mockups. The Creative Market bundles were a one-time $45 investment that's served me for 14 months.
Mockup tips for digital products
Show the product in use. A planner mockup should show it being used (on a desk with a pen), not just displayed. A template should show the filled-in version on a device screen.Multiple mockup styles per listing. Main image: lifestyle mockup. Image 2-3: close-up detail shots. Image 4: "what's included" flat lay. Image 5: size/format info. Variety gives buyers confidence.Match the mockup to your buyer. Selling kids' worksheets? Mockup on a child's desk with crayons. Selling business templates? Mockup on a clean office desk with a laptop. The scene should resonate with your target buyer.Consistent style across your shop. Use similar backgrounds, lighting, and color tones across all listings. This makes your shop look professional and branded. Buyers who visit your shop page see visual consistency. For the full listing optimization process, see [how to sell digital downloads on Etsy](/blog/how-to-sell-digital-downloads-on-etsy).
