Best Email Marketing Tools for Digital Product Sellers
Email converts better than social media for selling digital products. Here are the tools worth paying for and the ones that are overkill.
Why email matters for digital product sellers
Social media drove 3% of my Etsy traffic. Email drives about 40% of my Gumroad sales. The numbers aren't even close.
An email subscriber is someone who voluntarily gave you their address because they're interested in what you create. When you email them about a new product, 20-40% open it and 2-5% buy. Try getting those numbers from an Instagram post.
If you sell on Gumroad or your own site (not just Etsy), email is your most important marketing channel. Period.
The tools, ranked by value for digital sellers
ConvertKit (Kit) - Best for most digital sellers
Price: Free up to 1,000 subscribers. $29/month for 1,000+ subscribers. Why it works for us: ConvertKit was built for creators selling digital products. The automation features let you set up sequences like: subscriber joins list, gets welcome email, 3 days later gets a "here's my best product" email, 7 days later gets a discount code.Visual automation builder, landing pages, and basic commerce features (you can sell directly through ConvertKit, though most sellers prefer Gumroad or Shopify for checkout).
The free plan covers everything a new seller needs. Upgrade when you pass 1,000 subscribers and need automations.
Mailchimp - Best free option
Price: Free up to 500 contacts. $13/month for 500+.Why it works: Mailchimp's free plan is generous enough for beginners. Drag-and-drop email builder. Basic automations. Landing pages. Analytics. The downside: Mailchimp wasn't designed for creators. The interface feels cluttered compared to ConvertKit. And the pricing jumps quickly once you pass 500 subscribers. By the time you have 2,000 subscribers, ConvertKit is actually cheaper.
Gumroad's built-in email - Best for zero budget
Price: Free (included with your Gumroad account). Why it works: If you sell on Gumroad, you can email your customers directly from the Gumroad dashboard. No third-party tool needed. Limited features (no automations, no segmentation), but it works for simple "new product" announcements.I used Gumroad's email for my first 6 months. It drove about $120/month in repeat sales from product announcement emails. Eventually I moved to ConvertKit for better automation.
Beehiiv - Best for content-first sellers
Price: Free up to 2,500 subscribers. Why it works: If your strategy is building an audience through a newsletter (writing about your niche, then selling products to subscribers), Beehiiv's publishing and growth features are strong. Referral programs, recommendations, analytics. More of a newsletter platform than a marketing tool. What you don't need
HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, Drip. These are enterprise-level tools designed for SaaS companies and large e-commerce stores. Overkill for digital product sellers. Higher prices, more complexity, features you won't use.Paid social media scheduling tools. Buffer, Later, Hootsuite. Social media is not the primary sales channel for digital products. Don't pay for scheduling tools until you've confirmed social media actually drives your sales (check your analytics first). The email strategy that works
1. Collect emails from Etsy buyers. Include a newsletter signup link in your download PDF's thank-you page. "Get 15% off your next purchase" is a strong incentive.
2. Send a welcome sequence. New subscriber gets: welcome email (immediate), your best product recommendation (day 3), a helpful tip related to your niche (day 7), a discount code (day 10).
3. Send monthly product updates. When you launch new products, email your list. Keep it short. Product name, one image, one-sentence description, link to buy. Don't overthink it.
4. Link to Gumroad, not Etsy. Your email subscribers are your audience. Send them to [Gumroad](/blog/how-to-sell-on-gumroad-complete-guide) where you keep more per sale (10% vs 12-13% on Etsy).
